Ring-tailed lemur - Lemur catta
Species status - Near Threatened.
The Ring-tailed Lemurs are the most widely recognized lemur with their famous ringed tail and inquisitive nature they are both distinctive and endearing.
Ring-tailed lemurs as with all lemurs are endemic to Madagascar; this means they do not naturally live anywhere else on the planet. They are the most terrestrial of any lemur species, spending as much as 33% of its time on the ground. A group of lemurs such as ring-tails are known as a troupe and they are lead by a dominant female. When the troupe is travelling across their territory about 70% of their travel will be on the ground.
